I SUSPECT THAT THE VAN DER WELDE “DUTCH SHIPS IN A CALM” HAS BEEN OVER-CLEANED, GOING BY THE SKY IN PARTICULAR. I KNOW OLD VARNISH FALSIFIES BOTH COLOUR AND TONE, BUT THIS SKY LOOKS AS IF IT DESPERATELY NEEDS SOME GLAZES. I USED TO KNOW A PICTURE RESTORER WHO “LOVED” “RENOVATING” SKIES!!! SHE WAS NOT ONE FOR “LESS IS BEST”!

    • I have the same feeling, but nothing can replace the professional examination of the painting. I do not have this kind of knowledge, so I cannot offer an informed opinion. Thank you for pointing this out. It might explain why the colors of some paintings I saw in several museums were much more vivid than those I knew from photographs.
