Friends and traveling companions Jacob van Ruisdael and Nicolaes Berchem occasionally collaborated on paintings. Here Berchem’s figures of Italianate shepherds and travelers, including a gentleman and discharged soldiers, are strategically placed to suggest space and movement through Ruisdael’s light-filled, northern landscape. The monumental battered oak tree clinging to the sand dominates Ruisdael’s landscape both compositionally and thematically. By 1749 the painting was in Rome in the famous collection of Cardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzaga. (…)
