Jacob van Ruisdael – National Gallery (London) NG991. A Landscape with a Ruined Building at the Foot of a Hill by a River (c. 1655)

Materials: oil on oak. Dimensions: 22.8 x 29.3 cm. Inscriptions: signed. Acquisition: Wynn Ellis Bequest, 1876. Nr. NG991. Source: www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/a-landscape-wi…

There are two larger versions of this composition (Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Gemäldegalerie and Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen). The attribution of the National Gallery’s painting to Jacob van Ruisdael has been questioned in the past (http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/jacob-van-ruisdael-a-landscape-with-a-ruined-building).

Martin Rico y Ortega – Museo del Prado P02624. Desembocadura del Bidasoa (1872)

1872. Materials: oil on canvas. Dimensions: 39.3 x 72 cm. Legado Ramón de Errazu, 1904. Nr.: P02624. Source: http://www.museodelprado.es/coleccion/galeria-on-line/galeria-on-lin/obra/desembocadura-del-bidasoa/

Ruins in a Dune Landscape (c. 1650-1655)

Materials: oil on oak. Dimensions: 43.2 x 58.5 cm. Acquisition date: 1865. Nr.: NG746. Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/ruins-in-a-dune-landscape-115092

The ruins have not been identified with any still standing. The atmosphere they evoke resemble the mood created in both Ruisdael’s versions of his famous ‘Jewish Cemetery’ (Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen; Detroit Institute of Arts). The high dunes in the background recall the landscape near Haarlem, where Ruisdael was probably living in the early 1650s, which is probably when this picture was painted (http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/jacob-van-ruisdael-ruins-in-a-dune-landscape).
